Avoid biting nails or pulling hangnails: tearing skin may create an entry point for germs. The cuticle and surrounding folds help protect the nail unit; do not cut aggressively into intact attached tissue.
Nail technicians may observe redness, swelling, tenderness, abnormal thickening or drainage. These signs can have different causes and do not, on their own, establish a medical diagnosis. Avoid services that could aggravate the affected area and recommend suitable medical evaluation. Follow applicable scope-of-practice and salon sanitation rules.
