The nail plate is the hard visible portion of the nail. The cuticle and surrounding skin help protect the area where the nail grows out. Healthy, intact tissue is an important barrier against germs. Cutting deeply, pulling attached tissue or creating a wound can increase the risk of injury and infection.

CDC nail hygiene guidance advises against cutting cuticles as an infection-prevention practice. Nail technicians should not equate cutting more tissue with a cleaner or safer service. Follow the applicable licensing rules, work within the cosmetic scope, and avoid invasive manipulation of painful or inflamed skin.

Signs such as swelling, pain, drainage and changes that persist may justify referral to a healthcare professional. A technician should not diagnose a specific disease or prescribe treatment as a routine nail service. Do not cover a suspicious wound with product just to conceal it.
