Learning objectives
Explain the difference between cleaning and disinfection, name the after-client steps for foot spa basins, and read label directions before applying disinfectant.
Core learning — English (US)
Cleaning removes visible soil, debris, and product residues. Disinfection applies an appropriate antimicrobial product according to its labeled instructions. These are separate steps: spraying disinfectant onto remaining soil is not the same as completing a cleaning process.
EPA's foot spa guidance starts after each client with draining the basin and removing visible debris. Clean the surfaces with soap or detergent, rinse with clean water, and drain. Next disinfect using an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant suitable for the equipment and follow its label, including the appropriate contact time. Drain and rinse afterward as directed. Recirculating spas need attention to internal components so the solution reaches the relevant paths; consult the equipment manual.
Do not assume a universal contact time or concentration for every product. EPA describes 10 minutes or the time stated on a product label, which may differ. State cosmetology rules may specify additional requirements. Never mix chemicals or modify dilution without label authorization.
Salon scenario
A technician drains a used basin and sprays its visibly dirty walls. The next action is not to refill it for another client; the technician must finish cleaning and the labeled disinfection procedure first.
