Screen feet and lower legs
Before a foot bath, check for open sores, scratches, insect bites, scabbed wounds and other conditions that weaken the skin barrier. EPA recommends that clients with these conditions should not use a salon foot bath. Explain the reason in simple terms and offer an alternative service only if appropriate and allowed by local rules.
Identify the equipment
A simple basin, a whirlpool spa, an air-jet unit and a pipe-less circulating system do not all have identical internal parts. Read the equipment manual and cleaning procedure before use. Check that the basin and relevant components have been correctly processed after the previous customer; clear water alone is not evidence of disinfection.
Case study
The client has a scratch on the lower leg and the salon offers a fresh disposable liner. The liner does not remove the EPA precaution about broken skin. Question: Should a clean liner be used to justify foot-bath soaking with an open scratch? Answer: No.
