Understand acrylic nail chemistry
Acrylic enhancements are formed by reacting methacrylate monomers with polymers. The hardened material is different from uncured liquid product; small amounts of unreacted monomer may remain. The FDA notes that reactive monomers can cause adverse reactions in people sensitive to methacrylates, including redness, swelling and pain around the nail.
Avoid preventable contact
Read the label and Safety Data Sheet when applicable. Minimize direct contact between uncured monomer and skin, use chemical-compatible protection and keep product containers closed when possible. Do not assume that a familiar product name eliminates the possibility of allergy. Only medical professionals should diagnose a suspected allergy.
Practice question
A technician repeatedly gets uncured liquid on bare fingers but says it is harmless because it hardens later. Explain that exposure occurs before hardening and needs prevention. Question: What is one important way to lower the chance of sensitization? Answer: Avoid direct skin contact and follow product-specific protective directions.
